Did you know that reading and speaking to your child from a very young age helps them develop into adults who have a richer vocabulary and a better grasp of grammar?
We’re here with 4 easy tricks up our sleeve to help you build your child’s language skills:
Talk, Talk, Talk –
Talk about the day with your child or narrate the day as it evolves. It could be something as simple as describing your day – how you spent your day and then asking him/her to tell you about his/her day.
Read aloud more often –
It’s never too early to introduce your child to the magical world of books. Babies can hear you when they’re in utero, so imagine how much they can pick up when they’re out in the real world and listening to you read ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ out loud to them!
Play language and rhyming games together –
I Spy, Simon Says, Red light – Green light etc. are some of the many games that boost communication skills. Try them out once in a while and see which game your child feels most comfortable playing.
Encourage them to label their feelings –
Talk to them about how you are feeling “I am very happy today” or “I feel frustrated because of…”. Encourage them to categorise their feelings into anger, happiness, sadness and so on.
Improving your child’s language skills doesn’t have to be stressful at all. Treat it like a routine activity and you’ll see them growing more confident when it comes to communicating.
